Blueberry Planting Guide
Planting
They prefer a location with acidic soil with a pH around 4.5-5.5, full sun at least 6-8 hours a day and well-drained soil. Dig a hole around 2-3 times the size of the root ball. Space bushes about 2 ft apart and larger varieties 4-5 ft apart.
Fertilizing
Fertilize typically about twice a year, the first in early spring before new growth starts and second around late spring/early summer. Use a fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Follow package instructions to determine dosage.
Pruning
The best time to prune is early spring, around January to early March, when the plant is dormant. Pruning is not often needed for the first 1-2 years. Blueberries often take around 2-3 years to begin producing fruit.
Pollination
Most blueberries are self-fertile however, some varieties require another blueberry plant. There is evidence that some blueberry plants will have a higher yield if cross-pollinated with another variety.
